Back at it again with the food blog- plus an awesome new face lift including a logo designed by the incredible talented Amanda Raines. I <3 it so much (insert all of the heart eyes emojis). After this 3-month hiatus, when I was deciding what I wanted to share with you all, I decided to share all of the awesome places I have eaten over the past few months. In the next few weeks I will share the highlights- some in Columbus and others while traveling around.
The first adventure after my last post was traveling to Austin, Texas for the “If Gathering”. The mission of the “If Gathering” is to gather, equip and unleash the next generation of women to live out their purpose. I traveled with some kick-butt ladies and was able to hear and learn from some of the top speakers in the Christian Women’s circuit. Not only was there personal growth but we ate some bomb food. I planned my trip so I could visit our lovely family friends in Dallas- so I flew into Dallas and rented a car. Some people may be deterred by the 3-hour car ride but I loaded up my phone with podcasts (add major plug for “If I were You”) and planned my In-N-Out stop in Waco (add major plug for Fixer-Upper). In-N-Out has gotten me through some highs and lows in my life but with it only being in certain states I have to make sure to be strategic in my travels.
On the walk from our hotel to our conference, we would pass Joe’s Coffee. In addition to delicious coffee and lattes (with the option of almond milk- holler!) they had mind-blowing breakfast tacos. I had no idea what a big deal breakfast-tacos were in Austin- if I did I would have packed my bags and stayed. What is there not to like? Tacos ✔️ Breakfast ✔️ Some sort of awesome breakfast meat (chorizo ✔️ bacon ✔️ sausage ✔️) and an awesome locally made hot sauce ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ If you are in the Austin area this is my highest recommendation.
One of the other gems we found was La Condesa- a modern Mexican restaurant. After eating way too many breakfast tacos I decided to order a torta- I got the Milanesa De Pollo- it was super legit. But the star of the meal was the appetizers. We got a guacamole and salsa tasting. The guacs were out of this world- one had almonds and a chipotle puree, another had jumbo lump crab and there is always a seasonal flavor. While we were the seasonal guacamole was pepitas and goat cheese. My mom and I have a bit of a pepitas obsession- similar to Portlandia’s “put a bird on it” we feel that everyone should always “put some pepitas on it”- so I was thrilled. I will def be trying to recreate some of these come Cinco de Mayo!
While in Austin I had one of the best days of my life. I woke up in my hotel and rolled over and right before my eyes was an almond milk latte ❤️ that my dear friend had picked up on her way back from her morning run – (she was productive on this trip). We then headed to Austin New Church where we heard the most amazing sermon about how Jesus is always waiting for us, cooking breakfast for his disciples (I will later write an entire blog post on this message 🙌🏼). I then got to meet my idol, Jen Hatmaker, check her out- she is seriously awesome, but be warned she will wreck your life in the best way possible. And if that was all not enough, we then ate at what can only be described as a BBQ-er’s paradise. The Salt Lick BBQ is in the middle of nowhere- but as soon as you get there you know its going to be something special. The smell, the fact that its cash only and the long picnic tables just add to the ambiance. The sweet tea is a must, and I ordered the “Thurman’s Choice: The Plate That Poppa Ate”- brisket (burnt ends), Pork ribs and Sausage. PEOPLE- THIS MEAL IS LIFE CHANGING. If you are within 200 miles of this place you have to, have to go! There are so many other things to say but nothing will do it justice- you just need to experience it for yourself.
As if I needed another reason to love Austin- it is the headquarters of Whole Foods. In my eyes Whole Foods is everything. I love strolling through our local Whole Foods- it is the best and worst thing that it is two blocks from my house- looking at everything from the high quality meat, to the prepared food section, to the body care section- all of it makes me weak in the knees. In true elementary school fashion- I would marry Whole Foods if I could. While strolling through the gargantuan home store I stumbled across a man restocking the Kombucha section. I asked if he had tried the brand he was stocking, and he replied with “Yes! I brew it!”. Let me tell you guys- it was delish! He assured me that Kosmic Kombucha would be hitting the Columbus market before the end of the year. With flavors like Salty Dog- Kombucha, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Ginger, Sea Salt and Agave- how could you go wrong? It was so refreshing and delish- and promotes a healthy gut! I call that a win-win-win.
Austin has my heart and if keeping things weird is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
